May 2010 Featured Artist - Christine Sell-Porter - Painter

I am not a camera. My art is not a literal photographic reproduction of nature but an impressionistic interpretation of my relationship to my environment. I feel leaving something to the viewers imagination allows the viewer to enter into and respond to the images.

Many professional artists have helped to shape my skills and have helped to develop my own “style”. I attempt to interpret the subject matter creatively and hope to share the excitement of what I view. I strive to give special feeling to my subject matter and my response to it. My choice of color and light help to capture the mood and impact that I feel from the landscapes and scenes that I select.

My medium of choice is oil as it is so versatile and perfect for applying texture and brilliant color. Watercolor is a secondary medium that I enjoy for its spontaneity and transparency.

My paintings are frequently a “wrap around” canvas style which may or may not be framed. I also like to use recycled frames whenever possible.

I have painted as a hobbyist for 30 plus years. After retirement and building our home in Three Rivers, I have devoted more happy hours painting in my studio

Three Rivers beauty is an inspiration and has enhanced my appreciation of nature. Each day I feel fortunate to reside in such an inspirational setting and I hope my paintings show my enthusiasm.

April 2010 Featured Artist - Patsy Dolson - Painter

Patsy Dolson - April 2010 Featured Artist - Showing One of Her Paintings "I have always wanted to capture a beautiful garden, or that little cottage at the ocean edge, or a vase full of flowers on canvas. I often dreamed of being able to paint, and took a class in college.   At the time, the instructor really didn't offer any real direction for me. Marriage, career and a family consumed my life, and I've waited a lifetime before starting to paint.

I loved the phrase, "Never quit learning", but had no idea where it would take me next. A friend and neighbor invited me to paint in her studio. Surprise! Surprise! Hidden beneath was a very special gift. When I finished the painting and proudly took it home to show my husband, he said, "No way YOU did that?" I surprised myself!

I find the process so easy, yet so difficult at the same time. But I love it! A new door has opened to a vast new vista in my life, and now I look forward to going into my studio and enjoying the time to explore my paintings."

March 2010 Featured Artist - Eddie McArthur "Edge of the Lake" by Eddie McArthur - mixed media

"I've become fascinated with the use of different materials and styles to convey the feel I want for a particular piece so I tend not to stick to one type of work.

I work in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and mixed media. Right now I'm doing a series of Edges, several of which can be seen on the blog.

I work from my home in Three Rivers and have been painting since the early 90's when we lived in San Diego. I've been very fortunate to have had some early successes such as a group of my garden-related pieces having been picked up by a national retailer for use as note cards. I also had a one person show at a museum in New Mexico when we lived there, along with having shown at a number of group shows. I have pieces in private collections from San Diego to New York.

February 2010 Featured Artist - Debb Campbell

Print by Debb Campbell

"I consider myself a 're-entry' printmaker. I've been away from printing and serious art making for about 30 years.

My studio art degree, earned in the early 70's at UC Davis, with great instructors, has held up well.

I recently built a studio to house my press, so I'm back experimenting with collagraph and solar etching, exploring wood and lino relief printing and revisiting screen printing.

I also do collage, life drawing, and make hand made bound books."

In addition to being an artist, she is also an accomplished chef.

You may know her as Chef Debb.

January 2010 Featured Artist - Nikki Crain Artist George Smith

Weaving is my delight.

I enjoy natural fibers and yarns to make practical items to wear or use.

Each handwoven piece is one-of-a-kind or limited edition. I create cloth that cannot be duplicated in a factory. Playing with dyes reminds me of opening a new box of crayons in kindergarten. What fun awaits!

I also love candles and want the healthiest ones possible, so I pour natural vegetable soy candles.

December 2009 Featured Artist - George Smith - Ceramicist

Artist George Smith I began making pottery in 1974. A year later I quit my job in the banking industry to pursue a career in ceramics.

In 1982 I moved from San Diego to my current location in Three Rivers, CA, where I built my studio.

Over the last year I built two kilns, salt and pit fire. I have spent a lot of time working on new glaze formulas and alternative firing techniques.

Though most of my work is wheel-thrown, recently I have been producing hand built pieces. The hand building technique has allowed me to venture away from the standard round forms of wheel thrown pottery, and investigate alternative shapes. My current pieces include square dinner ware (plates, bowls, casseroles, cups, etc.), and multi-sided jars.

My 1,600 sq. ft. studio includes a 600 sq. ft. kiln patio which houses five kilns. These include one small electric kiln, two stoneware kilns, one salt kiln, and one pit fire kiln on wheels. Four of these kilns I built myself.

I have been married to Donna, my wife, for 35 years. We have four children and two grandchildren.

November 2009 Featured Artist - Marn Reich - Ceramicist

Artist Marn Reich Marn Reich writes, "I began working in clay about 15 years ago. I love the challenges it presents – getting it to assume the shape and color I desire and keep it without collapsing, cracking or discoloring. Once I’ve conquered a particular challenge, I’m on the lookout for another – making something bigger, smaller, more lifelike, more whimsical.

I enjoy working at home, surrounded by my favorite things, but I also enjoy working with others and having the stimulation and input of others’ ideas, comments, and criticisms, so I also work once a week at a studio in Visalia, where I can interact with friends and fire my work.

September 2009 Featured Artist - Michael Hansen

Michael Hansen - the Photographer

Michael Hansen is passionate about his photography and enjoys bringing the natural beauty he finds on his wild journeys home in the form of photographs. Michael’s photographic style reflects his love of these wild places and wild creatures.

One of Michael’s goals as a photographer is to not only provide a unique perspective out into the beautiful world we live in, but also provide images that communicate words and feelings.

Photography has not only helped Michael look at things in very unique ways, but also to see things beyond the scene in front of him. Things he might never have noticed otherwise. He hopes the pictures here do a similar thing for those who view them.
"Misty Autumn" Balch Park, Mountain Home State Forest

Michael studied advanced photography at Porterville College and continues to learn and evolve as a photographer through workshops and the wealth of information available on the Internet, always striving to improve.
